Thanks to our carpentry merit badge counselor on Monday night, everyone got
hands on experience planing boards, clinching nails, laying shingles, and a
skill that a lot of carpenters learn early, how to pull out a nail. Next
week will be starting on the step stool as the final requirement.

Either email or tell Evan or Mrs Breeden if you are interested in the Chicamauga trip
set for Sep 17-19. You have the option of coming up Friday or Saturday.
The 147th Anniversary of the battle will be that weekend and we are camping
on the battlefield.
Decisions need to be made:
Who is going?
How are you getting there?
What do you want to do about meals:
Patrol cook
Group cook — Ms. Mary is taking care of any adults with menu suggestions
gladly taken. If the Troop decides they want to kick in $10 and cook as a
group, see Ms. Mary.

Evan is planning the hiking trip in October. Input to Evan on route, date,
etc are encouraged. Tentatively scheduled for Oct 15-17.

Camporee is scheduled for Nov 13-14, Camp Westmoreland. Mission Impossible
will be a night camporee. Cost will be $10 for registration and food costs.

DESCRIPTION OF
NIGHT MISSIONS
The following is a brief description of the 11 night missions (whose
successful completion is so crucial to the survival of mankind). You will
get written sealed orders upon completion of each mission to guide you to
the next mission. The missions below are listed in random order. Read these
descriptions very carefully. A lot is riding on the outcome.

LASER GAUNTLET
Patrols take turns being the invaders and defenders. Defenders choose two
people from their patrol who are then blindfolded and stand with
lasers(flashlights) ready for action. Invaders must approach quietly, they
are not allowed to run. If they make noise and are “flashed” with a laser,
they’re dead and must sit down. Defenders win by killing off all invaders.
Invaders win if they can tag defenders without being killed. There is a time
limit for each round. ________________________________________
BLIND ESCAPE
An explosive device goes off blinding everyone except one person; he can see
but is paralyzed and can’t move. He must guide his fellow agents by voice
through a dangerous series of obstacles to rescue him and escape to safety.
Teamwork and cooperation is your only hope for survival.

STEALTH HIKE
The group must traverse a route from Point A to Point B without being seen
or heard. Enemy agents are on patrol, and have been warned of potential
invaders. They will be looking for you.

ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE
You must recover an item of secret information. It is stored in a container
in a distant location. You will follow directions that will take you to the
container. When you arrive you find several booby trapped decoy containers
near it. Which is the right one? If you carefully follow the clues, you will
choose wisely. If you choose the wrong container, it could be a tragic end.

STAR TREK
Learn about the heavens and how to find your way at night using the stars,
then trek across an open expanse under a luminous star filled sky.

JAWS OF DEATH
You will exercise your jaws on a buffet of sausages, cheese, crackers,
cookies, veggies, cold cut sandwiches, soup, pizza nuggets & sauce,
lemonade, and hot beverages.
________________________________________
SOLO ENCOUNTER
A serious discussion about the spirit of Scouting, followed by a question
for you to ponder, and then time completely alone under the stars for some
personal reflection.

SECRET STRANGER
Somewhere along the trail you will be approached by a stranger. Is he a
friend or an enemy? Does he speak the truth or falsehoods? What does he want
from you? Do you dare trust him?

ENEMY ENCAMPMENT
You must evaluate the strength of an enemy encampment and make a map of the
location. You cannot be seen or heard in your attempt. The future of western
civilization depends on your successful completion of this mission.

AGENT RESCUE
An agent has been hit. You will be given instructions for finding him. Treat
his wounds, and then evacuate him to safety. The trouble is, enemy agents
are looking for him too. Who will find him first?

MYSTERY MISSION
Sorry, this is a complete mystery. No one knows what the mission is (not
even the president). It will remain a mystery until moments before you
begin. (National security you know) It’s big! It’s vitally important! Be
prepared for anything!

Very casual outing this weekend.  Due to football and band and church
commitments, everyone agreed to meet at Mrs. Baslock’s lake house on
Saturday.  Backpacking practice where everyone is in charge of their own
meals, camping gear, fishing gear.  Camping out Saturday night and returning
Sunday morning.

Hayden’s Eagle Project is approved.  Work date set for Sep 11.  The Holy
Spirit Catholic Church wheelchair ramp to the chapel is getting
reconstruction, ie demolition and re-building.  Address is 619 Airport Road.
Details to follow.

August 9 — starting historical Carpentry merit badge.  Your SPL Evan’s
uncle will be going over the first requirements.  Good hands on practice for
Hayden’s Eagle project which has been approved.  He will be setting up a
date to tear down an old handicapped ramp and replace it with a new ramp.

The requirements for the carpentry merit badge can be found at

1. Demonstrate the use of the rule, square, level, plumb-line, mitre,
chalk-line and bevel.
2.  Demonstrate the proper way to drive, set, and clinch a nail, draw a
spike with a claw-hammer, and to join two pieces of wood with screws.
3.  Show correct use of the cross-cut saw and of the rip-saw.
4.  Show how to plane the edge, end and the broad surface of a board.
5.  Demonstrate how to lay shingles.
6.  Make a simple article of furniture for practical use in the home or on
the home grounds, finished in a workmanlike manner, all work to be done
without assistance. (Start looking at projects to get them approved and to
get materials together)

Aug 13 — Ordeal/Brotherhood Weekend.  August 13-15, 2010 Camp Sequoyah.  If
any OA members are interested, you can go on the Coosa website to register.

Aug 16 — Court of Honor.  Bigfoot (new Scouts) patrol brings sweet snacks.
Dragons bring salty snacks.  Ms. Mary is bringing all the coke products left
from the wedding. Scouts show up at 6:30 p.m. for set up.  Lots of merit
badges from camp.

Aug 21 — After pricing out canoes, Logan and Ben S. decided a more thrifty
outing would be Tim’s Ford.  Mrs. Baslock has invited the troop out again.
Camping, swimming, fishing (if you are under 13, you don’t need a Tennessee
license.  13 and older need a license).  Need plans for meals, Dominos does
not deliver.

Congratulations to Evan as the new SPL.  His staff includes Pete as ASPL, BJ
as Scribe; Matt as Quartermaster, Boyce as Chaplain Assistant, Ben P. as
Troop Guide, Jonathyn as OA representative and Logan as Junior Assistant
Scout Master.

Will started his Eagle project and said thanks to everyone who showed for
the workday Saturday.

Mark your calendars for next year.  The troop voted to return to Woodruff.

If anyone is interested in helping any time of the day Saturday, the project
starts at 7 a.m., Madison County High School, Highway 72.  You will need
work gloves and shovels.  Waters and snacks will be provided.  Safety
lecture will be done on site.

The project will involved cutting limbs, pulling weeds, putting down
landscaping trim and weed blocking material.  The two benches will either be
removed or sanded down for refurbishing.  Mulch will be spread over the
project area.
