Pioneering weekend on January 22-24, Hicks property. Micah and Levi are
planning the event that include building launch devices for pumpkins,
possible cold weather camping (its Alabama, the temperature could be 60
degrees or 20 degrees), dutch oven cooking. Any Scout interested in the
in pioneering merit badge needs to get a blue card.
Thanks to all the merit badge counselors who have been meeting with the
Scouts at the Monday night meetings. The Scouts have the opportunity to
complete requirements and sign up for needed merit badges.
If any Scout is interested in a specific badge, or if an adult wants to
become a Merit Badge Counselor, please let Mrs. Breeden know.

Congratulations to Ben Shepard on his election to Senior Patrol Leader.
He will be selecting his staff and take office after Court Of Honor on
December 21. He will serve until after summer camp in June 2010. Any
Scout who needs a leadership position for advancement needs to talk to
Ben.
Thanks to Mrs. Baslock for bringing the three UAH hockey players to the
meeting. That met the Citizenship in the World requirement for several
Scouts as well as provided an interesting program.
Court of Honor is scheduled for December 21. Parents need to attend to
hear about summer camp and registering their Scout with Troop 96.
Reminder: there will not be a meeting on December 28. Too many people
will be out of town, but there will be a meeting on Dec 21 and January
4.
Troop 96 will be holding “Scout Blast” Saturday, Dec 5, Sharon Johnston
Park. Mission Control Commander is Pete Shepard who is also presenting
the campfire program. Parents need to drop off the Scouts at 8 a.m.
Saturday in the camping area to set up the events. Pick up will be
Sunday at 9 a.m. Bobby Marsh is feeding them lunch, dinner and
breakfast so all they will need is a sleeping bag, personal gear and a
mess kit. Tents and troop gear will be out there. If anyone is leaving
Saturday night, please remind me.
BJ Marsh completed his Scout Master Conference and will need a Board of
Review Monday. A panel of parents may be needed so if you have time,
please let Mrs. Hicks know.
Committee meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday and all parents are
welcome to attend. Plans are in the future for a lock in on January 2 to
work on merit badge requirements and troop planning as well as tent
repair. Volunteers are needed who are willing and able to stay up.

The Bike Trip to Rockmart is on schedule for 7 a.m. Saturday with a
return of sometime Sunday depending on long you ride Sunday.
If you haven’t responded to the emails or turned in a leave slip, you
are not on the list to go. The following people responded and are
signed up:
Noah, Will, Pete, Ben.
IMPORTANT CHANGE. We will leave from 349 Brock Road, Brownsboro rather
than go to the church to save some mileage for the group. Tents will be
provided for Scouts if needed.
Meal plan is:
Sandwiches, fruit, cookies at mid point of the ride
Snack, fruit and water at 45-mile point so you don’t get discouraged.
Dinner is chicken spaghetti, garlic bread, brownies
Breakfast is boiling bag burritos, orange juice, oatmeal, banana cake
and coffee.
The Fall Camporee permission slips will be passed out Monday and a head
count is needed that night to reserve space and plan for the events. A
patrol size has to be seven Scouts to participate in the events.
Think about whether you want to cook as a patrol or a group and post
your opinion on the Troop 96 facebook page or website. Menu ideas are
welcome.
There have been several requests to build twin towers at the camporee.
Nothing as large as the last tower, but two seven-foot towers would be
impressive. (Logan, do we have eight seven-foot poles plus support
poles to make the tower? Post your ideas on facebook.
Let Logan know if you are interested in any of the following roles.
Patrol Guidelines
* Each patrol shall be comprised of a team of trained specialists.
Each member shall assume one or more roles as listed below in either the
lead or assistant position. While all positions may have assistants, a
navigator assistant is required.
o Navigator: This Scout will be expected to navigate the troop
between obstacles and will need to be an expert in map and compass
skills. A strong background in orienteering skills is essential to
success.
o Navigator’s assistant: Also expert in map and compass skills,
the Navigator’s assistant will work with the Navigator to improve
navigational accuracy and minimize mistakes and errors.
o Patrol Leader: The patrol leader is in charge of his group at
all times and must be able to make time critical decisions. Success of
this mission will depend on his critical thinking skills and the
discipline of his troops to follow his lead.
o Medic: Scouts should expect casualties if they encounter enemy
troops. The medic must be well versed in first aid skills and be
prepared to handle any type of emergencies found in the field handbook
(Boy Scout Handbook).
o Pioneering Expert: Navigating difficult terrain will require
skills in the ability to tie knots and perform lashings. While all
Scouts should be familiar with these skills, at least one Scout will be
expected to lead these activities and inspect the work of others to
ensure that knots are correctly secured.
o Naturalist: The Scouts will be traveling in uncharted territory
and must deal with elements of the wild. Additionally, they will need
to avoid contact with enemy troops and dangerous wildlife and plants.
The Naturalist should be able to identify and interpret a variety of
wildlife signs and plant life to safeguard the patrol.
o Cryptographer: Scouts can expect to encounter enemy troops
along the way. As they are young, they will likely be released;
however, they will certainly be searched and must not be caught carrying
any obvious intelligence data. The Cryptographer is responsible for
ciphering and deciphering all reconnaissance and intelligence data
collected during the mission.
* The Navigator should be the point (lead) man for each patrol and
utilize his assistant to enable accurate two-man navigation.
Additionally, one Scout shall serve as “Tail End Charlie” and take up
the rear position to ensure that no man is left behind. No one shall
travel behind Tail-End Charlie.
* All patrols must include at least one adult advisor. Please
note that the advisor’s role is for safety only. To ensure a fair
competition, the advisor should not engage in assisting the Scouts
unless they are lost or in danger. This advisor shall also carry a cell
phone for emergency contact with the Camporee Chairman. Emergency
contact numbers are 256-684-4769 (Pat Burris), or 256-679-5767 (Kevin
Kitchens).
A head count is needed for adults going so post a note, email or call
Mary Breeden.
